Cold-Rolled Steel Coil Packing: Moisture and Handling Control

A cold-rolled coil has a bright, unprotected strip surface. Two things damage it after the mill: moisture, which starts rust, and handling, which dents edges and marks the outer laps. When we design a cold-rolled coil packing line, the package build and the equipment are planned against those two risks.

The Typical Cold-Rolled Coil Package, Layer by Layer

On cold-rolled coil packing lines we have specified, the package can include these elements. Each project uses the subset its customer requires:

Moisture Control: VCI Under a Sealed Wrap

VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) packaging is standard for steel coils shipped by sea. On our lines, VCI paper or VCI film goes on first and the stretch-film wrap closes the package. Our eye-through wrappers set the overlap anywhere from 20% to 90%. More overlap gives more film layers over the strip surface and edges, which suits longer storage and export routes.

Stretch film is our normal wrapping material because film rolls are long. Paper wrapping is also supported, but paper rolls are shorter than film rolls, so on large-OD coils a paper roll may need replacing before the package is finished.

Handling Protection: Surface Contact and Edge Defenses

• Coil car saddles are lined with nylon or rubber.
• Conveyor and cradle rollers are PU-covered.
• Edges: with the optional outer edge-protector device, outer edge protectors are applied automatically during eye-through wrapping. Inner edge protectors are fitted manually or by a robot.

Strapping Cold-Rolled Coils

The final strapping is done over the wrapped package, so the strap does not sit on the bare strip, and steel coils generally need no extra pads at the strap points.

• Steel strap keeps the coil from unwinding or springing loose in transport.
• PET strap secures the package, for example to a pallet, and holds formed edge protectors in place.

On a cold-rolled coil strapping and packing line we have specified, both a circumferential strapping machine and a radial strapping machine are used:

• Circumferential strapping machine: on an automatic line it straps automatically under PLC control; offline, a gantry lowers the coil into the strapping position. The strap is fed from a vertical strap dispenser, and the head can move left and right for OD strapping.
• Radial strapping machine: mounted on a trolley base that moves forward and backward. A rotating orbit and strap dispenser find the coil eye for through-eye strapping.

Wrapping and Labeling on the Cold-Rolled Line

On a cold-rolled line we specified, coils are wrapped through the eye in three layers. A twin film shuttle applies different film types at the same time and changes film rolls automatically, and a cutter-clamp heat-seals the film. Film pre-stretch is adjustable up to 50%. A weigh scale with an integrated label printer and ID/OD scanners feeds coil data to the wrapping system.

Close-Coupled to the Mill and Storage

Our automatic coil packing line can be close-coupled to the production line. Coils can arrive directly from the cold-rolling line or from an automatic storage and retrieval system (ASRS). On site, we provide installation and technical service. The line is covered by our 2-year warranty.

Which materials protect cold-rolled coils from moisture? VCI paper or VCI film under a stretch-film wrap. VCI is standard for sea export.

How long does strapping take? About 20 seconds per strap on our cold-rolled strapping line.

What utilities does the strapping line need? AC 400 V/50 Hz, 15 kW, and compressed air at 0.6 MPa (about 500 Nl per cycle).

Do strap points need pads? Generally no. On cold-rolled steel coils, the strap goes over the wrapped package and edge protectors.

Can edge protectors be applied automatically? Outer edge protectors can be, with the optional device. Inner edge protectors are fitted manually or by a robot.
