Coil Packing Line Weighing & Labeling Systems | FHOPE
A coil is not ready when the film is applied — it is ready when identity, weight, label, and record agree. Learn how to define release fields, sources of truth, and the missing-record behavior on your packing line.
Labeling, Weighing and Traceability on a Coil Packing Line
Labeling, Weighing and Traceability on a Coil Packing Line
A packed coil leaves the line with its identity printed on a label. If the weight or the label is wrong, the coil is shipped under the wrong record. On our automatic coil packing line systems, weighing, labeling and data exchange are built into the line, so every packed coil leaves with a correct record.
Coil Data Acquisition and Slitting Line Integration
- From the slitting line: the line's industrial PC receives coil parameters directly from the slitting line.
- From a barcode reader: an automatic bar-code reader identifies the coil when it enters the packing line. Some projects add an automatic coil measuring device at the same point.
- From the operator: coil parameters can also be keyed in manually or transferred over Profinet to set the down-ender's handling.
The image shows a coil packaging line connected to a slitting line project. The release record must follow the same connected flow — the physical coil, the package, and the label are confirmed together.
Weighing
Our scales work to an industrial accuracy of 1/3000. The weighing station sits in the line. Our automatic slit-coil packaging system, for example, includes a coil weighing machine between the down-ender and the strapping machine. On our PPGI line, a weighing and labeling machine weighs each coil after wrapping.
Labeling
| Label point | What it does |
|---|---|
| Weighing and labeling machine | Integrates weighing, printing and label application; applies bar-code labels automatically after wrapping |
| ID printing labeler | Prints and applies a label inside the coil bore |
| OD printing labeler | Prints and applies a label on the outer diameter |
| Sidewall labeling (project option) | Applies a label on the coil end sidewall |
On one cold-rolled coil line we specified, the weigh scale is integrated with a label applicator magazine and printer, ID/OD scanners feed the wrapping system, and two labels are applied per coil (one on the end sidewall, one on the OD). The printer type is chosen with the customer.
The image shows a labeling station on a coil packing line. The label is a verification step, not the end of the process — it must be checked against the coil identity and order rule before release.
Sharing the Record
Our control system shares the packing data with the plant's production systems, such as MES or ERP. On our copper coil packing lines, we supply weighing, end-face imaging and MES integration as standard. The data fields, the label layout and the interface are agreed with each customer during design; Profinet is one interface we use.
The image shows a steel coil label machine. The label machine is one point in the traceability chain — identity, weight, quality state, and shipment record must be linked at every handoff.
Why It Is Part of the Packing Line
Where the line weighs and labels after wrapping (as on our PPGI line), the label sits on the finished package and the recorded weight includes the packaging. Where the scale sits before strapping (as on our slit-coil system), the bare coil is weighed. The coils can then be tracked through packing, weighing and labeling into shop-floor tracking and inventory management.

FAQ
Can the line print and apply labels automatically? Yes. Our weighing and labeling machine prints and applies bar-code labels automatically, without an operator.
Can you label the bore, the outer diameter and the sidewall? Yes. We supply ID and OD printing labelers, and sidewall labeling as a project option.
Can the line connect to our ERP or MES? Yes. The control system receives coil data from the slitting line or a barcode reader and shares the packing data with production systems such as MES and ERP.
How accurate is the scale? 1/3000 industrial accuracy.
Is weighing available on copper lines? Yes. Weighing, end-face imaging and MES integration are standard on our copper coil lines.
